Tutorial: Embroidery Appliques
Embroidery applique can seem like a daunting task when first starting out. In this article we look to break the appliqueing process down in to more manageable pieces that will allow for successfully embroidery appliques.
Here are the instructions for doing an applique:
1. Hoop the fabric that you are going to put the appliqué on.
2. Stitch out the first color. This is called your die line or placement stitch and will just be a running stitch.
3. Place your fabric that you will be using for your appliqué over the first stitches making sure it covers them completely.
4. Stitch out your next color. This will be the tack down stitch to hold the appliqué material in place.
5. Remove the hoop from your machine but DO NOT remove your fabric from the hoop.
6. Trim the appliqué fabric as close to the tack down stitches as possible but do not clip the stitches (I find using small, curved scissors for this works best)
7. Place your hoop back on the machine
8. stitch the last color of your design, this will be the final stitching to give your appliqué a finished look.
Some things to remember: You do not have to actually change colors all three times. The reason appliqués are done in multiple colors is so that your machine will stop after each piece of the pattern allowing you to place, fabric, trim, etc.
It is best to trim as close as possible so that you don't have stray thread or fabric sticking out from the final stitching (usually a satin stitch)
Some people will use a spray adhesive like 505 spray when they place their appliqué fabric down to help hold it in place.
I do recommend this method to help insure there are no puckers or the appliqué fabric does not shift, but it is not totally necessary.
